Seoul: A senior presidential official announced the possibility of reopening a disbanded consultative body aimed at addressing a prolonged walkout by trainee doctors, emphasizing the need for increased efforts from all parties involved to resolve the ongoing medical crisis. Jang Sang-yoon, the senior presidential secretary for social policy, made these remarks during a radio interview with KBS, highlighting the recent dissolution of the consultative body, which included the ruling party, government, and doctors' groups, due to unresolved differences. According to Yonhap News Agency, the consultative body was originally established to address the medical crisis that began when thousands of junior doctors resigned en masse in protest of the government's decision to significantly increase the medical school enrollment quota. Jang explained that discussions stalled over the proposed quotas for the 2025 academic year, leading to a decision to pause and allow for a cooling-off period. However, he stated that the p latform remains open and discussions can resume at any time. Jang called on the medical community to consider various perspectives and work towards a compromise to end the standoff. He urged doctors to move beyond rigid positions and to establish a unified governance structure. Additionally, Jang reiterated the government's stance that changes to the 2025 enrollment quotas are not feasible, but indicated that discussions regarding the 2026 quotas could proceed if the medical community proposes reasonable alternatives.
