Seoul: The presidential office has called for the immediate implementation of preventive measures following a significant personal data breach at Coupang, an e-commerce giant. The breach has affected over 30 million users, escalating public concern over potential misuse of personal information.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Kang Hoon-sik, the presidential chief of staff, emphasized the need for Coupang to take responsibility and present clear measures in a meeting with senior aides. The meeting addressed fears that the leaked information could be used for online scams or unauthorized credit card transactions.

Kang highlighted recent reports suggesting that Coupang's customer terms might include clauses granting the company immunity from customer damage. Vice presidential spokesperson Ahn Gwi-ryeong indicated that Kang has called for a review of these terms to assess their fairness to consumers. Should they be deemed unfair, corrective measures will be recommended.

Last month, Coupang revealed that the personal data of 33.7 million customers had been compromised. The information includes names, phone numbers, email addresses, and delivery details. Coupang assured customers that financial information and login credentials were not affected. The police have found no evidence of secondary damage so far.
