Seoul: The presidential office is preparing to begin relocating its facilities back to the former presidential compound of Cheong Wa Dae, with the move expected to be finalized by the end of this month, officials announced. The relocation began on Tuesday, marking a significant shift in the administrative operations of the government.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the decision to move back to Cheong Wa Dae follows former President Yoon Suk Yeol's controversial move in 2022. Yoon had transferred the presidential office to the defense ministry compound in Yongsan, citing intentions to enhance communication with the public. However, his presidency ended abruptly due to a failed martial law bid.

Since assuming office in June, President Lee Jae Myung has been committed to returning the presidential office to its traditional location in Cheong Wa Dae. The renovations of the facility have now been completed, paving the way for the move.

Officials have already begun transporting office supplies to Cheong Wa Dae, having started the process by removing items from communal facilities the day before. The bulk of the relocation is scheduled to take place outside of standard working hours and over the weekends to minimize any disruptions to official duties.

The relocation process has created a buzz of activity within the presidential office, with protective materials laid out on floors and a noticeable presence of workers involved in the move. Kang Hoon-sik, the presidential chief of staff, stated on Sunday that the relocation is anticipated to be completed by Christmas, allowing the presidential office to resume full operations from Cheong Wa Dae.
