Washington: President Donald J. Trump has initiated a significant move to bolster national security and enhance the United States' drone production capabilities by signing a Proclamation to impose tariffs on drones and their components. This measure aims to address the national security threats posed by foreign imports and strengthen America's drone industry and supply chain. According to The White House, the Proclamation introduces a 100% ad valorem tariff on specific drones with a maximum takeoff weight exceeding 25 kilograms or equipped with thermal imaging capabilities. These categories are deemed particularly sensitive for national security purposes. Drones categorized as smaller and lacking certain sensitive capabilities will face a 25% tariff, while drones and components from regions like the European Union, Japan, and the Republic of Korea will incur a 15% tariff. A 10% tariff is set for drones from the United Kingdom, contingent on the origin of the hardware, software, and technology being from thes e nations and the U.S. The Proclamation also empowers the Secretary of Commerce to create an onshoring program, supporting companies investing in manufacturing drones and components domestically. This move is part of a broader strategy to mitigate risks associated with foreign reliance for critical Unmanned Aircraft System components, which could compromise U.S. national security and lead to cybersecurity vulnerabilities. President Trump's history of protecting critical industries is emphasized, highlighting actions taken under Section 232 to secure domestic manufacturing in sectors crucial to national and economic security, including steel and pharmaceuticals. In line with this, the 2025 Executive Orders signed by President Trump were aimed at ensuring American leadership in drone development and maintaining sovereignty over U.S. airspace. The tariffs are scheduled to take effect 21 days post-signing, with specific components receiving a 180-day grace period depending on their sensitivity and exemption st atus. This comprehensive approach seeks to rapidly expand U.S. drone production, secure American jobs, and maintain technological dominance in a key area of modern military and commercial operations.
