Seoul: In a significant development during his visit to the Republic of Korea, President Donald J. Trump has successfully negotiated a trade and economic deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping. This agreement is hailed as a major achievement, bolstering U.S. economic power and safeguarding national interests while prioritizing American workers, farmers, and families.
According to The White House, the agreement includes multiple commitments from China. Notably, China has agreed to halt the flow of precursors used to manufacture fentanyl into the United States and to suspend its recent export controls on rare earth materials, which were set to affect global markets. Additionally, China will issue general licenses for exports of rare earths and related materials, effectively removing previous restrictions.
China has also agreed to cease all retaliatory tariffs and non-tariff countermeasures imposed since March 2025, affecting a wide range of U.S. agricultural products. Furthermore, China has committed to purchasing substantial quantities of U.S. soybeans and resuming trade in sorghum and hardwood logs. Measures will be taken to ensure resumption of trade from Nexperia's facilities in China, facilitating the production of critical legacy chips for global distribution.
In response, the United States will reduce tariffs on Chinese imports related to fentanyl flow reduction and extend certain tariff exclusions. The U.S. will also suspend implementation of specific trade rules and actions, while continuing negotiations with China under Section 301.
President Trump's visit to Asia has been marked by a series of trade agreements, including reciprocal trade agreements with Malaysia and Cambodia, and frameworks for negotiations with Thailand and Vietnam. In Japan, significant projects and agreements have been announced to boost U.S. industrial and energy sectors, as well as combat illegal drug trafficking.
The agreements and commitments secured during this trip underscore a renewed focus on strengthening U.S. economic partnerships and enhancing global trade relations.
