President Moon mourns deaths of Marines killed in helicopter crash
SEOUL, July 23 (Yonhap) -- President Moon Jae-in expressed condolences Monday over the deaths of soldiers killed in last week's Marine Corps helicopter crash, pledging to uncover the cause of the crash and take steps to prevent similar accidents from happening again.
Five Marines were killed and another injured when the MUH-1 Marineon, the Marine variant of the KUH-1 Surion helicopter, crashed at a military airport in the southeastern city of Pohang on Tuesday. A funeral was held in Pohang.
"Even though I was not able to be at the funeral, my heart is truly grieved," Moon said during a weekly meeting with senior secretaries. "I once again offer words of condolences and consolidation to the bereaved families."
At the start of the meeting, Moon and other secretaries held a moment of silence for the fallen soldiers.
Earlier in the day, Moon also posted a Twitter message about the soldiers.
"We will never forget the soldiers who sacrificed themselves for the country and their unit," Moon said after listing the names of the five victims. "We will thoroughly determine the cause of the accident and take follow-up measures to make sure this kind of accident won't happen again."
