President Lee Jae Myung Calls for Early Reclamation of Wartime Operational Control

Accra:Seoul President Lee Jae Myung, in a recent unscheduled press conference, emphasized the urgency of Korea "reclaiming" wartime operational control (OPCON) at an early date, asserting that the nation is fully capable of doing so. This statement comes in the wake of comments made by U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) Commander Gen. Xavier Brunson, who suggested that the OPCON transfer could be delayed due to changing conditions and new standards.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Gen. Brunson's remarks at the Indo-Pacific Summit in Washington, D.C., hinted at possible delays in the OPCON transfer, while maintaining support for the initiative. In response, Korea's defense ministry expressed concerns but reaffirmed the commitment to transfer OPCON once mutually agreed conditions with the United States are met.

Brunson further stirred controversy by stating that, from the United Nations Command's perspective, Korea's territory begins at the southern fence of the Demilitarized Zone, a comment perceived as condescending by Korean officials. This perspective conflicts with the UNC's role under the armistice agreement, which focuses on access and activities within the DMZ rather than sovereignty.

President Lee's comments aim to address these tensions and underscore the importance of maintaining a balanced relationship with the United States. He has previously highlighted the need to avoid submissive attitudes in international relations and called for discipline within Korea's national security and foreign affairs teams to ensure pragmatic diplomacy.

The ongoing dialogue and cooperation between Seoul and Washington remain crucial, with President Lee advocating for subtle, behind-the-scenes discussions alongside public actions. Both nations are encouraged to engage in realistic talks to further peace and security on the Korean Peninsula.
