Jeju: President Lee Jae Myung expressed grave concerns on Monday regarding the ongoing energy crisis triggered by the Middle East conflict, revealing that the severity of the situation is causing him sleepless nights. He emphasized the urgent need for a transition to renewable energy during a town hall meeting on the southern island of Jeju, warning that the crisis is "worse than you think" and holds the potential to worsen.
According to Yonhap News Agency, President Lee highlighted the global chaos stemming from the energy issue and reiterated the necessity for a swift move towards renewable energy sources. During the meeting, he also sought the opinions of local residents on pressing regional matters, including the proposed construction of an undersea tunnel connecting Jeju to the mainland and the development of a second airport on the island.
While discussing the potential undersea tunnel, President Lee subtly expressed his opposition, stating that the unique island characteristics are integral to Jeju's identity. This meeting marked the conclusion of a series of town hall gatherings led by President Lee across 12 cities and provinces since his inauguration in June last year.
Cheong Wa Dae announced that it is exploring other formats to promote direct communication between President Lee and the public, potentially organizing town hall meetings based on themes instead of regions.
