Seoul: Han Dong-hoon, leader of the ruling People Power Party (PPP), announced Thursday his commitment to rally his party against an opposition-led impeachment motion targeting President Yoon Suk Yeol. The announcement follows a move by the main opposition Democratic Party, along with five minor parties, to report an impeachment motion over Yoon's aborted martial law declaration to a plenary session of the National Assembly. A vote on the motion could take place as early as Friday. According to Yonhap News Agency, Han emphasized his role as party leader to ensure the motion does not succeed, aiming to prevent what he described as "unprepared chaos" from impacting the public and party supporters. During a party meeting, Han stated, "As party leader, I will work to ensure that this impeachment (motion) does not pass to prevent harm from unprepared chaos to the public and supporters." Han made it clear that his efforts are not aimed at defending the president's controversial actions, reiterating his stance tha t President Yoon should depart from the party. "Those responsible for unsettling the public and causing harm through unconstitutional martial law, including the president, must be held strictly accountable," Han added. The impeachment motion, backed by 191 opposition lawmakers, requires a two-thirds majority to pass in the 300-member National Assembly. This means the opposition will need to secure at least eight votes from PPP lawmakers to pass the bill.
