Seoul: The new leader of the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) expressed conditional acceptance of President Lee Jae Myung's proposal for a three-way meeting that includes the leader of the ruling Democratic Party (DP). The acceptance hinges on a guarantee of a separate one-on-one meeting with the president, as stated by Rep. Jang Dong-hyeok, the newly elected leader of the PPP.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the proposal for the meeting came after President Lee instructed his aides to arrange discussions with Jang and DP leader Jung Chung-rae. The purpose was to brief them on the outcomes of his recent summit with U.S. President Donald Trump. Jang emphasized that while a tripartite meeting could serve to discuss the summit's results, it must be followed by a dedicated session to address pressing issues affecting the people's livelihoods.

Jang suggested that a joint statement or fact sheet would be the most effective way to communicate the summit's outcomes. He expressed concern that the proposed three-way meeting might divert from urgent matters concerning citizens' welfare. Jang insisted that even if the meeting proceeds, the president should clearly outline when he will next engage in a direct conversation with the opposition leader.

Jang's recent election as the PPP leader comes amid internal party challenges following the ousting of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who faced backlash over a failed martial law attempt in December and the conservative party's defeat in the June presidential election. During a recent parliamentary retreat, Jang called on PPP lawmakers to unite in opposition to the current administration as they approach the National Assembly's regular session.
