Seoul: The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld a two-year prison term for Rep. Kweon Seong-dong of the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) for accepting illegal political funds from the Unification Church, stripping him of his parliamentary seat.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the top court confirmed an appellate court ruling that found Kweon guilty of violating the Political Funds Act. He was found to have accepted 100 million won (US$67,300) in January 2022 from a church official who was seeking favors from the former administration of President Yoon Suk Yeol.
Under the law, lawmakers are stripped of their seats in the National Assembly if they are sentenced to a fine of 1 million won or heavier punishment for violating the Political Funds Act. This decision underscores the judiciary's stance on maintaining integrity within political processes and ensuring that violations of the Political Funds Act are met with strict consequences.
