Seoul: Police on Thursday initiated an investigation into allegations of treason against President Yoon Suk Yeol following his declaration of martial law earlier this week. The investigation has been entrusted to the security investigation team under the National Office of Investigation of the National Police Agency after two complaints were lodged. According to Yonhap News Agency, the first complaint was filed by the minor opposition Rebuilding Korea Party, while the second came from a group of 59 activists. Both complaints accuse President Yoon, along with former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, Army Chief of Staff Gen. Park An-su, and Interior Minister Lee Sang-min, of treason and related charges for their roles in the declaration and subsequent lifting of martial law on Tuesday. The prosecution and the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials have also received complaints against Yoon, accusing him of treason. They are currently deliberating on whether to initiate their investigations o r transfer the cases to the police. Legal sources reveal that Prosecutor General Shim Woo-jung has instructed prosecutors to commence their own inquiry, assigning the case to a public security investigation division at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office. On Wednesday, additional complaints were filed by minor opposition parties, including the Labor Party, against Yoon, Kim, and Park with the prosecution, accusing them of treason. In light of Shim's directive, both the police and prosecutors are expected to proceed with parallel investigations. Prosecutor General Shim, addressing reporters outside his office, stated that the prosecutors would carry out the investigation "in accordance with the law and principles." When questioned about the feasibility of a joint investigation with the police, he remarked, "It's hard to say at this stage." He further added, "We are reviewing various ways to ensure the investigation is conducted properly. We will take any necessary action depending on the stage of t he investigation."
