Seoul: Prime Minister Kim Min-seok announced that the government will thoroughly implement measures to improve air quality. Kim made the remark ahead of the start of the seasonal fine dust management system, which the government operates from December to March each year.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim emphasized the importance of clean air quality, highlighting its impact on people's health and national competitiveness in terms of industry and tourism. He made these comments while presiding over a meeting of the government's fine dust response committee. He stressed the necessity of achieving the targeted ultrafine dust concentration level of 19 micrograms per cubic meter and urged for maximum efforts in this regard.
The prime minister outlined that the government will use cutting-edge equipment and artificial intelligence to enhance the monitoring of air pollutant emissions. Additionally, reduction measures will be thoroughly implemented for key sources, including the power, industry, and transportation sectors. He also mentioned that at multiuse facilities, such as large supermarkets, libraries, and museums, the government plans to raise the indoor air quality standard by 20 percent.
Under the seasonal fine dust management system, the government requires restricted operations of coal plants, construction sites, and other large emitters of ultrafine dust. Furthermore, the government will provide tailored technical and equipment support to small business owners who struggle to meet these requirements.
