Seoul: Prime Minister Kim Min-seok on Sunday vowed that the government will reflect demands from civil and industrial sectors as much as possible when setting the nation's greenhouse gas emission reduction goal for 2035.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim emphasized the importance of considering various stakeholders during a high-level policy consultation meeting between the ruling party and the government. "Based on respect for the Constitutional Court's ruling, the government will seek wisdom that reflects the international community, local civic groups, and industrial sectors," he stated.

Last week, the government introduced two proposals for the nationally determined contribution (NDC) by 2035, with one set to be submitted to the United Nations. The first proposal suggests cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 50 to 60 percent by the target year, while the second option proposes a reduction of 53 to 60 percent.

In response to these proposals, industry and environmental groups raised concerns, arguing that the targets are either too ambitious or insufficient. This follows a ruling by the Constitutional Court in August of last year, which underscored the need for greenhouse gas reduction targets to align with scientific and international standards, without imposing undue burdens on future generations.

The government aims to finalize the proposal this week after further discussions through a consultation meeting between the ruling party and the government, deliberation by a presidential committee, and approval by the Cabinet.
