PM Nominee Pledges to Prioritize Livelihood Improvement for Citizens

Seoul: Prime Minister nominee Han Seong-sook has declared her commitment to prioritizing the improvement of citizens' livelihoods if she is confirmed as the country's second-highest-ranking official. This announcement comes after President Lee Jae Myung appointed her as the successor to outgoing Prime Minister Kim Min-seok on Sunday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Han, a recognized information technology expert, previously served as the first minister for medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and startups under President Lee. The transition in the prime minister's office is occurring as Kim prepares to vie for leadership of the ruling Democratic Party.

Han, upon her arrival at the office designated for her parliamentary confirmation preparations, emphasized her dedication to addressing the pressing challenges facing citizens. "If I'm given the heavy responsibility of prime minister, I will devote all my energy to resolving the emergency situation in people's livelihoods," she stated. Han highlighted the need to harness artificial intelligence to stimulate industrial reorganization and vowed to ensure the benefits of such advancements are equitably shared.

Expressing gratitude towards her predecessor, Han praised Kim for his significant achievements during his tenure and pledged to build upon his legacy by implementing tangible changes that resonate with the public.

Han, 59, boasts a distinguished career beginning as a reporter for a local computer journal after her graduation from Sookmyung Women's University in 1989. Her career trajectory includes pivotal roles at Empas and NHN, the latter of which transformed into South Korea's leading internet platform, Naver, under her leadership. As CEO of Naver, Han was recognized by Fortune Magazine as one of the world's 50 Most Powerful Women from 2017 to 2020.

Following her tenure as CEO, Han continued her influence in Naver's European business and served as an adviser to the company. As Minister of SMEs and Startups, she spearheaded initiatives like "Startup for All," which bolstered youth entrepreneurship and enhanced support for small businesses and self-employed workers.

If confirmed, Han would break new ground as the first female prime minister in the Lee Jae Myung administration and only the second female to hold the position in South Korea since Han Myeong-sook served from 2006-2007.
