Seoul: Prime Minister Han Seong-sook declared on Wednesday that one of her main priorities is to develop effective strategies to reduce suicides and lonely deaths, in alignment with President Lee Jae Myung's key policy goal of "politics saving people's lives." Han emphasized her commitment during a meeting with Ven. Jinwoo, head of the Jogye Order, the largest Buddhist sect in South Korea, who pointed out the nation's struggle with happiness levels despite its economic success.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Han recounted that President Lee instructed her at a Cabinet meeting to address not only suicides but also various other factors contributing to deaths, urging an exploration of diverse policies. Earlier in the day, Han received briefings from the welfare ministry, police, and other agencies on these pressing issues.

Han highlighted the prevalence of lonely deaths and stressed the importance of government intervention to address these challenges. She stated that the focus should not only be on economic growth but also on sharing and resolving these societal problems. Han's visit to Ven. Jinwoo was aimed at gathering insights to help shape governmental direction on these matters.

The Prime Minister also acknowledged the intense competition in South Korea that has emerged alongside rapid economic growth, which has left many individuals feeling isolated and antagonistic. Han expressed deep concern over this troubling situation.

Following her meeting with the Buddhist leader, Han planned to engage with leaders of the country's Catholic churches later in the day.
