PM Announces Formation of Task Force to Probe Martial Law Attempt Involvement

Seoul: Prime Minister Kim Min-seok announced the creation of a government task force to investigate the involvement of public officials in former President Yoon Suk Yeol's martial law attempt, describing it as an "inevitable" step toward stabilizing state affairs.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Prime Minister's remarks came during a Cabinet meeting amid rising concerns that the task force, officially known as the "task force to respect the Constitution and innovate the government," could be used to target dissenting civil servants. Kim emphasized that the initiative aims to restore constitutional order and unite the public sector, with investigations to be conducted swiftly and lawfully, ensuring they remain within necessary bounds.

The proposal for the task force was made by Kim during a Cabinet meeting led by President Lee Jae Myung last week. President Lee supported the initiative, emphasizing the need for a government-led investigation separate from a special counsel team to hold public officials accountable for their roles in the martial law attempt.

At the recent meeting, Kim stated, "The task force will demonstrate the wisdom of concentration and restraint for the stable innovation of the executive branch in order to uphold the people's call to swiftly and firmly clean up the insurrection and focus on people's livelihoods." The task force will operate across 49 central government agencies, excluding the National Intelligence Service and bodies under the presidential office.
