Nagoya: Seong Seung-min brought home South Korea's first gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, triumphing in the women's individual modern pentathlon event. Seong secured her victory with 1,492 points after excelling in five disciplines: fencing, swimming, obstacle course racing, and the laser run, which combines running and shooting, at Anjo Sports Park, located just southeast of Nagoya, Japan. According to Yonhap News Agency, Seong's achievement marks a significant milestone as she became the first South Korean female pentathlete to win the individual event, ending China's dominance of four consecutive gold medals in this category. The silver and bronze medals were awarded to Zhang Mingyu and Wu Xiyao of China, respectively. Meanwhile, Seong's compatriots, Kim Un-ju and Shin Su-min, finished in seventh and twelfth places, with scores of 1,399 and 1,380 points. Seong's impressive performance also contributed to South Korea's second-place finish in the team event, trailing behind China. The team ranki ngs are determined by aggregating the scores of the top three athletes from each country. As a former world champion and Olympic bronze medalist, Seong was a strong contender for the gold in the women's modern pentathlon. Her previous achievements include winning the 2024 World Modern Pentathlon Championships, making her the first South Korean woman to claim a world title in the event, and securing an Olympic medal at the Paris Summer Olympics, where she became the first Asian female pentathlete to do so. During the final at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, Seong maintained her lead from start to finish. She excelled in fencing with 250 points and added 358 points in the obstacle course, completing it in 29.26 seconds. Her score remained strong after earning 295 points in the 100-meter freestyle, clocking in at 1:01.14. Seong started the final laser run in the lead and successfully held off her competitors to cross the finish line first, clinching the gold medal for South Korea.
