Seoul: South Korean game maker Pearl Abyss Corp. announced on Tuesday that it has experienced a shift to a net loss in the third quarter, attributed to weak sales figures. The company reported a net loss of 7.8 billion won (US$5.6 million) for the July-September period, which contrasts sharply with a net profit of 14.8 billion won in the same period the previous year. According to Yonhap News Agency, the company also recorded an operating loss of 9.2 billion won, down from an operating profit of 2.1 billion won a year earlier. Sales saw a decline of 6.4 percent year-on-year, amounting to 79.5 billion won. A significant factor in this downturn was the revenue drop from Pearl Abyss's flagship MMORPG title, Black Desert, which saw a 21 percent decrease to 54 billion won. In contrast, the sales of their spaceship game series, Eve, increased by 28 percent, reaching 20.5 billion won. Geographically, North America and Europe were the largest contributors to Pearl Abyss's sales, accounting for a combined 56 percent of total revenue. Meanwhile, Asia contributed 24 percent, and the domestic market in South Korea made up 20 percent. In response to these figures, Pearl Abyss has announced plans to introduce new updates to Black Desert and the Eve series, alongside the launch of a new game title, Crimson Desert, aimed at PC and console platforms, in hopes of revitalizing their sales.
