Seoul: The National Assembly has approved a significant legislative change by passing a bill that designates Labor Day as an official public holiday. This new designation will allow all workers, including public servants, to observe the day as a holiday starting this year.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the parliament's approval involved revising the Act on Public Holidays to include May 1 as a national holiday. This change is set to take effect following Cabinet approval. Previously, the privilege of a paid day off on Labor Day was limited to private-sector workers, leaving public servants, teachers, and others in specialized job roles, such as parcel delivery workers, without this benefit.

National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik commented on the development, stating that the recognition of Labor Day as a national holiday represents a step forward in addressing disparities affecting those employed in the public sector.
