Seoul: Maggie Kang, co-director of the Oscar-winning "KPop Demon Hunters," announced that the sequel to the mega-hit animated film will be larger in scale, offering plenty for fans to look forward to. Speaking at a press conference in Seoul, which celebrated the film's two Oscar wins last month, Kang expressed her desire to keep details under wraps to avoid spoilers.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the film claimed victory in the Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song categories with "Golden" from its original soundtrack at the 98th Academy Awards. Co-director Chris Appelhans, who is visiting the country for the first time since the film's release on Netflix, emphasized that the guiding principle behind the sequel remains consistent with the first film.
He stated that the team aims to surprise audiences by pushing boundaries and breaking rules, while maintaining authenticity at the core of the film. Appelhans highlighted that the authenticity will permeate all aspects of the movie, from the characters to the music and mythology. He also acknowledged the cultural influence from his Korean wife, noting that the lead character Rumi embodies the pride, strength, and unity of the Korean people.
On the question of scale, Appelhans mentioned that it is the team's responsibility to create the most spectacular movie possible, with a budget reportedly larger than the first film due to its success. However, he stressed the importance of focusing on the story and its essence. He expressed that Rumi's story reflects the resilience and strength found in Korean culture and history.
Netflix confirmed early last month that it is producing a sequel to the film, which has become the streaming platform's most-watched movie. Kang expressed her pride as a Korean filmmaker, noting the audience's desire for more of the Korean story and characters. She mentioned that there is much more to explore in the world they have built, and she is eager to share it, considering it just the beginning.
