Seoul: Opposition parties have taken significant steps to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol following the legislative block of his martial law declaration. On Wednesday, a motion was formally submitted by the main opposition Democratic Party along with five other minor opposition parties, including the Rebuilding Korea Party and Reform Party, to the bills office at the National Assembly at precisely 2:43 p.m. According to Yonhap News Agency, the impeachment motion was backed by 190 opposition lawmakers and one independent lawmaker, notably without any endorsement from ruling party members. The opposition coalition aims to present the motion at a parliamentary plenary session scheduled for Thursday, with intentions to push for a vote by Friday or Saturday. The legislative process mandates that an impeachment motion must be voted on within a window of 24 to 72 hours after being reported during a plenary session. Rep. Shin Chang-sik from the Rebuilding Korea Party mentioned that the exact timing of the vote-whet her immediately or at a later point within the 72-hour period-remains undecided. To successfully pass the impeachment motion, a two-thirds majority is required in the National Assembly. Given the 300-member composition of the Assembly, the opposition will need to secure at least eight votes from members of the ruling People Power Party to achieve the necessary majority.
