One dead, 92 injured in apartment fire in Cheongju
CHEONGJU, South Korea, A fire broke out at an apartment building in Cheongju in the central province of North Chungcheong before dawn Thursday, leaving one resident dead and 92 others injured, police and firefighters said.
The fire occurred on the third floor of the 25-story apartment building in Sajik-dong, Cheongju, about 120 km south of Seoul, at around 4:08 a.m., they said.
One resident whose identity was withheld was found dead, while 92 other residents suffered injuries from smoke inhalation. Of the injured, 41 were rushed to the hospital.
The fire was extinguished by firefighters in about 40 minutes, with about 100 residents fleeing to the rooftop.
Police and firefighters said the fire started in the main bedroom of a third-floor apartment house for reasons yet to be determined.
The 25-year-old victim, who lived with his grandfather in the fire-engulfed third-floor house, lost his life trying to put out the blaze, they said.
Police plan to conduct an autopsy on the victim to determine the exact cause of his death.
