Seoul: The newly elected head of South Korea's leading doctors' advocacy group has called on President Yoon Suk Yeol to amend his medical reform policy to resolve the ongoing strike by trainee doctors. Park Hyung-wook, after his election as the new chief of the emergency committee of the Korean Medical Association (KMA), addressed the urgent need for policy changes amid the strike by thousands of trainee doctors and medical professors. The protests are in response to the government's medical reform, which includes a significant increase in medical school admission quotas. According to Yonhap News Agency, Park emphasized that President Yoon Suk Yeol is pivotal in enacting policy improvements that would facilitate the return of trainee doctors to their duties. He warned that without presidential intervention, the medical crisis would persist, continuing to impact the public adversely. The government's decision to raise the medical school quota by approximately 2,000 annually over the next five years aims to mi tigate the shortage of doctors in essential medical fields and rural areas. The government's policy has led to widespread resignations among junior doctors since February, severely disrupting the national healthcare system. In response to the crisis, a consultative body consisting of the ruling People Power Party, the government, and doctors' groups was established earlier this week to seek resolutions to the ongoing walkout.
