Seoul: The National Assembly is set to make a decision on Wednesday regarding filing a complaint against the interim chief of Coupang's Korean unit over alleged perjury. This development comes amid a parliamentary hearing into a massive data leak by the online retailer, which affected nearly two-thirds of South Korea's population.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the move follows a statement by Harold Rogers, interim CEO of Coupang Corp., who claimed during the hearing that the company conducted an internal investigation into the data leak under the direction of the National Intelligence Service (NIS). Rogers alleged that the NIS instructed the company to contact the individual responsible for leaking user information. However, the NIS denied issuing such instructions and has requested the Assembly to pursue a complaint against Rogers for alleged perjury.

The decision on whether to proceed with the complaint will be made later during the hearing. This session aims to scrutinize Coupang's handling of personal data leaks and investigate alleged unfair practices within the company.

The government reiterated on Tuesday that the significant data breach at the U.S.-listed e-commerce giant impacted 33 million customers in South Korea. In response, Coupang announced a compensation plan on Monday, following an apology from founder Kim Bom-suk. However, consumer rights groups have criticized the compensation plan, labeling it a marketing strategy intended to boost purchases and membership renewals.
