Seoul: The opposition-controlled National Assembly passed impeachment motions targeting the chief state auditor and three top prosecutors on Thursday. This action centers around their roles in investigations concerning the relocation of the presidential office and first lady Kim Keon Hee. According to Yonhap News Agency, the impeachment motions were directed at Choe Jae-hae, Chair of the Board of Audit and Inspection (BAI); Lee Chang-soo, chief of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office; and prosecutors Cho Sang-won and Choi Jae-hun, who work under Lee. With the passage of these motions, all four individuals will be suspended from their duties until the Constitutional Court makes a decision on whether to uphold the impeachments. This marks the first instance of a BAI chief being impeached by the parliament. The voting results showed a strong majority in favor of the impeachments, with 188-4 against Choe, 185-3 against Lee, 187-4 against Cho, and 186-4 against Choi. Members of the ruling People Power P arty (PPP) chose to boycott the vote. The opposition accuses Choe of conducting an inadequate review of alleged irregularities related to the 2022 relocation of the presidential office, which was part of President Yoon Suk Yeol's campaign promises. The three prosecutors face accusations of failing to indict the first lady after an investigation into her alleged involvement in a stock price manipulation scheme. Initially, the impeachment motions were set for a vote on Wednesday, but the process was delayed following President Yoon's brief declaration of martial law. The main opposition Democratic Party initially postponed the impeachment motions for the state auditor and prosecutors to focus on an impeachment motion against President Yoon over his martial law decree. However, they reversed their decision on Thursday after the PPP declared its official opposition to Yoon's impeachment.
