North korea: North Korea's Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui has described the deployment of North Korean troops to Russia as an "exemplary case" of the implementation of a treaty with Moscow. This statement was made during a meeting with Andrey Kondrashov, the Director General of Russia's Tass news agency, as reported by a Russian news outlet on Tuesday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the meeting took place on Monday as part of a visit by a delegation from Tass to Pyongyang. The visit included the signing of a media cooperation agreement between Tass and North Korea's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). Choe emphasized the strategic nature of the troop deployment, which was carried out under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement between North Korea and Russia. She stated that Chairman Kim Jong-un mobilized a specific article of the agreement to send North Korean units to the Kursk region.
Choe Son-hui also expressed confidence that Tass' information activities would significantly contribute to the development of friendly relations between North Korea and Russia. The deployment involves around 15,000 North Korean combat troops sent to support Russia in its conflict with Ukraine, following the signing of the strategic partnership treaty by Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin in June 2024.
In a separate report on Tuesday by KCNA, it was noted that the Tass delegation also met with Jo Yong-won, the new chairman of the standing committee of North Korea's parliament, the Supreme People's Assembly. During this meeting, Jo affirmed North Korea's commitment to the spirit and obligations of the treaty with Russia, as reported by Tass.
