N. Korean Foreign Minister Choe to Attend Eurasian Security Conference in Belarus

Minsk: North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui is set to participate in a Eurasian security conference in Belarus this week, as reported by a Russian news outlet on Monday. This information was confirmed by the Belarusian foreign ministry.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Minsk International Conference on Eurasian Security is scheduled to take place in Minsk on Tuesday and Wednesday. The event will be attended by representatives from 40 nations and seven international organizations, as noted by RIA Novosti. Among the participants are Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and Democratic People's Republic of Korea Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui.

The North's state media earlier reported on Choe's visit to Russia and Belarus, which is at the invitation of the respective governments, though no further details were disclosed. Additionally, Russia's foreign ministry announced that Choe would embark on a three-day working visit to Moscow from Sunday through Tuesday.

Choe's trip coincides with U.S. President Donald Trump's expressed desire to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un during his visit to South Korea for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation gathering. However, experts indicate that the likelihood of a Kim-Trump meeting decreases, considering Choe's critical role in managing diplomacy with the U.S.

During his previous term, Trump engaged in three direct meetings with Kim, including two summits in Singapore in June 2018 and Hanoi, Vietnam, in February 2019, alongside a brief meeting in June 2019 at the Panmunjom border village in the Demilitarized Zone separating the two Koreas.
