N. Korea Begins Construction of Memorial Museum for Troops Killed in Russia-Ukraine War

Pyongyang: North Korea has initiated the construction of a memorial museum in Pyongyang to honor its troops who died while fighting alongside Russia in the war with Ukraine. The groundbreaking ceremony, described as a "great symbol" of the North's relationship with Moscow, was reported by state media on Friday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the ceremony for the Memorial Museum of Combat Feats at the Overseas Military Operations was held the previous day. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, along with other key officials, was present at the event, as reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

During his speech, Kim Jong-un described the memorial hall as a significant representation of the growing bilateral relations between North Korea and Russia. He emphasized that the ties between the two nations are being strengthened continually. "In the battlefields of fierce conflict between justice and injustice in the world, the relations between the two countries have passed the strictest test for their solidity," Kim stated, reaffirming North Korea's alliance with Moscow.

Since October last year, approximately 15,000 North Korean troops have been deployed to the Russia-Ukraine war, following a mutual defense treaty signed in June 2024. South Korea's spy agency reported in April that around 600 North Korean soldiers have been killed, with over 4,000 troops injured while fighting for Russia.

Kim reflected on the departure of North Korean combatants to Russia, noting their willingness to fight without expecting any rewards or recognition. He highlighted the deep trust and shared purpose between North Korea and Russia, emphasizing their solid and genuine relations.

This will be the first time North Korea constructs a memorial hall for its troops who have been deployed overseas. The museum, located in Pyongyang's Hwasong district, will feature a cemetery, a memorial hall, and a monument for the fallen soldiers. It will also display photos, artworks, and remnants from the battles.

Kim Jong-un marked the start of the construction by shoveling the first scoop of earth. Russian Ambassador to North Korea Alexandr Matsegora was also present at the ceremony. The event included North Korean troops who had returned from Ukraine and families of the deceased. Photos from the KCNA showed Kim embracing and comforting some soldiers.

In August, North Korea held a commendation ceremony for its troops involved in the Russia-Ukraine war. At that event, Kim announced plans to construct a new street in Pyongyang's Taesong district, named Sappyol Street, to commemorate the exploits of the fallen troops.
