Melaka Intensifies Surveillance to Prevent Tuberculosis Spread

Melaka: The state government is intensifying surveillance measures to prevent the spread of tuberculosis (TB) as a precautionary step, despite receiving no complaints from the Melaka State Health Department or tourism industry stakeholders.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Melaka Tourism Promotion Division (BPP) General Manager Nasrul Ahmad clarified that drastic actions are not necessary at this time, as the disease's spread has not affected the state's tourism sector. He stated, "As of today, we have not received any feedback or complaints from hotels, restaurant operators, or travel agencies regarding a decrease in tourist numbers due to this issue. The State Health Department has also not reported any alarming situations." Nasrul shared these remarks after attending the Gema Ramadan Ceremony with Police and Military Retirees in Ujong Pasir.

The event, which was officiated by the State Tourism, Heritage, Arts, and Culture Exco, Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman, coincided with the Federation of Malaya Independence Proclamation Day. Nasrul addressed concerns about the potential impact of TB on Melaka's tourism sector, which is preparing for several significant events under Visit Melaka Year 2.0 and Visit Malaysia Year 2026. He emphasized the state government's commitment to public health and collaboration with health authorities to maintain control over the situation.

Nasrul noted that although tourism has not been directly impacted, a cautious approach is being adopted. "If public health is not monitored properly, it could potentially have implications for the industry in the future. The approach being taken involves infection control, case monitoring, and ensuring there is no community transmission," he added.

Regarding tourist arrivals, Nasrul mentioned that health screenings are routinely conducted at major entry points such as Melaka Sentral, the Immigration, Customs, and Quarantine (ICQ) Complex, and the airport. He confirmed that "Health screenings are being conducted as usual by authorities, including the Health and Immigration Departments. So far, no reports or complaints have been received from the enforcement officers at those entry points."

During the event, 50 police and military retirees were honored for their contributions to the state and country.
