Daejeon: The Marine Corps on Sunday held a ceremony to mark the anniversary of North Korea's 2010 shelling of a border island that killed two soldiers and two civilians. The event took place at Daejeon National Cemetery in Daejeon, approximately 140 kilometers southeast of Seoul, and was attended by family members of the fallen Marines, S. Sgt. Seo Jeong-u and L. Cpl. Mun Gwang-uk, as well as Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back and Marine Corps Commandant Ju Il-suk.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Ju Il-suk emphasized the enduring spirit of national devotion exhibited by the war heroes in his commemorative address. He stated, "The Marine Corps will not forget the spirit of a soldier's devotion to a nation that was demonstrated by the war heroes and fulfill its mission for the peace and freedom of the Republic of Korea."

The attack on Yeonpyeong Island on November 23, 2010, by North Korean artillery prompted return fire from Marines stationed on the island and resulted in the deaths of two soldiers and two civilians. The incident marked North Korea's first attack on a civilian area in the South since the Korean War from 1950 to 1953.

S. Sgt. Seo Jeong-u lost his life while returning to his unit after heading to a pier for his final vacation before discharge. L. Cpl. Mun Gwang-uk was killed in action while preparing for battle shortly after being transferred to the Yeonpyeong unit.
