Seoul: The 2025 MAMA Awards began in Hong Kong with a solemn tribute to the victims of a catastrophic high-rise apartment fire that claimed over 100 lives earlier this week. The opening ceremony, held at Kai Tak Stadium, featured a poignant moment of silence led by the event's main host, Park Bo-gum.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Park Bo-gum, dressed in a black suit, addressed the audience with heartfelt condolences to those affected by the tragic incident. He expressed hopes for no further damage and invited attendees to join in a moment of silence to honor the deceased. Following the tribute, Park emphasized the power of music as a means to heal and unite, stating that the performances were prepared with a sense of responsibility amid the somber circumstances.
Park also announced that the awards ceremony would contribute donations to assist the victims and their families, urging the audience for their support. The tragic fire occurred at the Wang Fuk Court apartment complex on Wednesday, resulting in numerous fatalities and leaving about 200 individuals unaccounted for, as reported by local authorities. The proximity of the event to the incident had raised questions about whether the ceremony would proceed as planned.
CJ ENM, the South Korean media and entertainment company organizing the MAMA Awards, confirmed on Thursday that the two-day event would continue but with modifications to honor the victims. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to relief efforts, and performers were advised to maintain a respectful tone throughout the show.
The awards ceremony, scheduled to conclude on Saturday, features performances by popular K-pop acts including Hearts2Hearts, Enhypen, TWS, Super Junior, NCT Wish, and Riize. Despite the tragedy, many industry stars participated, although Hong Kong actor Michelle Yeoh chose to withdraw from the event.
Winners accepted their awards in black suits, reflecting the gravity of the moment, and offered condolences and hopes for swift recovery for those impacted by the disaster.
