Seoul: The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) announced on Thursday its intention to conduct a vote on Saturday regarding an impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk Yeol. The motion is a response to Yoon's recent declaration of martial law, which he subsequently lifted. According to Yonhap News Agency, the DP, along with five other minor opposition parties, has submitted the impeachment motion. They argue that President Yoon's declaration of martial law constitutes a violation of the Constitution and other legal statutes. President Yoon declared martial law on Tuesday night, citing "anti-state" activities by the opposition. However, the martial law was lifted after six hours, following a rejection by 190 lawmakers in parliament. Cho Seung-rae, the DP's deputy spokesperson, stated that the vote on the impeachment motion is scheduled for approximately 7 p.m. on Saturday. This timing is intended to give ruling party lawmakers ample opportunity to consider their stance on President Yoon's actions. The motion was reported to a plenary session of the National Assembly early Wednesday, and by law, it must be voted on within 72 hours of being reported. For the impeachment motion to pass, a two-thirds majority is necessary, requiring support from at least eight lawmakers from the ruling People Power Party (PPP). Han Dong-hoon, leader of the PPP, has vowed to marshal efforts to prevent the passage of the motion, which would result in the immediate suspension of President Yoon's presidential duties. Additionally, the DP plans to seek a revote on a bill that calls for a special counsel investigation into allegations of corruption and election interference involving First Lady Kim Keon Hee. This bill, vetoed by President Yoon for the third time, also requires a two-thirds majority to override the veto.
