Seoul: The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) announced on Thursday its intention to push for a vote on Saturday regarding an impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk Yeol. This move follows Yoon's controversial declaration of martial law and its subsequent lifting, which the DP argues was a violation of the Constitution and other laws. According to Yonhap News Agency, the DP, along with five other minor opposition parties, submitted the impeachment motion in response to Yoon's martial law declaration. This declaration was made on Tuesday night, with Yoon citing "anti-state" acts by the opposition as the reason. The martial law was lifted six hours later after being rejected by 190 lawmakers in parliament. Cho Seung-rae, the DP's deputy spokesperson, revealed the party's plan to hold the impeachment vote at approximately 7 p.m. on Saturday. This timing is intended to give ruling party lawmakers adequate time to deliberate over their decision regarding Yoon's actions. The motion was initially reporte d to a plenary session of the National Assembly on Wednesday morning. By law, an impeachment motion must be voted on within 72 hours of being reported. For the impeachment motion to pass, a two-thirds majority is required, necessitating support from at least eight lawmakers from the ruling People Power Party (PPP). In response, PPP leader Han Dong-hoon has committed to rallying efforts to block the passage of the motion, which would result in the immediate suspension of Yoon's presidential duties.
