Seoul: The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) organized a rally near the Constitutional Court in central Seoul, urging the court to remove impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol from office following his brief imposition of martial law in December.
According to Yonhap News Agency, DP floor leader Park Chan-dae addressed the crowd, warning that South Korea would face dire consequences if Yoon were to return, labeling him as the "mastermind" of the December 3 martial law. Park emphasized the need to prevent living in a "lawless hell overrun by terror and riots."
During the rally, DP Representative Jeon Hyun-heui expressed confidence that the court would unanimously rule for Yoon's removal with an 8-0 decision. The court currently has eight justices, and by law, at least six must consent for an impeachment to be upheld. Acting President Choi Sang-mok recently appointed two justices to the bench.
The DP reported that around 35,000 individuals participated in the rally, including 80 lawmakers and the party's leadership. This event marked the DP's first outdoor rally since the declaration of martial law.
