MAFRA to Build Korea’s First Farming and Fishery History and Culture Center
? The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA, Minister Kim Jae-soo) will open the Farming and Fishery History and Culture Center in 2020 to systematically promote the value and future growth potential of farming and rural areas and the development of agriculture as an industry.
? The Farming and Fishery History and Culture Center will play its role in sharing the history of agriculture and fishery and future technologies with urban adults and children, and will promote the ecological and cultural values of agriculture and fishery to them.
? The center will be used as an urban healing place which will attract over one million visitors a year. It will be a space for education and experience, allowing visitors to understand and experience the preciousness and culture of the agricultural and fishery industries.
? The MAFRA conducted a feasibility study and basic planning for the center last year and began to design it this year.
? The edifice will be erected on a 50,000 ? site (87,000 ? including a connected site, provided by Suwon city). Its total floor area will be 18,000 ?. The center will have two floors above ground and one basement floor. The project will cost about 100 billion won.
? The ministry will conduct a basic and detailed design for architecture and exhibition this year. Construction work will be carried out based on the design during 2018 and 2019. The center will open and welcome visitors in the first half of 2020 after a trial operation.
? The Farming and Fishery History and Culture Center is Korea's first agricultural and fishery history and culture center. The center will be a 'farm village' space where people acquire agricultural historic and cultural values such as Seo Lake (Chukmanje), Yeogi Mountain (Bronze Age and Iron Age sites and the tomb of Dr. Woo Jang-chun) and a paddy field of Unification Rice. They will experience the past, present and future of the agricultural and fishery industries.
* Chukmanje (Seo Lake) in Suwon: The International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) listed Chukmanje as Korea's first heritage irrigation structure (HIS) item.
? In addition, the construction area is located near Hwaseo and Suwon Stations, next to National Highway No. 42. The center not only has a good location and access to transportation, but, when it is connected to historical and cultural spaces such as Suwon Hwaseong Fortress and Hanggung Palace, it can also serve as an integrated cultural space where people can take a tour in an urban area.
? The center consists of the main building, a greenhouse and three outdoor spaces.
? The main building will have a history museum, a farming and fishery center, a high-tech agriculture center and a food culture center, so that visitors can directly experience the history and culture of agriculture and fishery, and the value and future growth potential of agriculture and rural areas.
? The center will help visitors understand the importance and culture of the agriculture and fishery industries, it will satisfy their intellectual curiosity about the industries, thus promoting their growth.
? The greenhouse will provide an educational ICT smart greenhouse space for activities such as presenting high-tech agricultural cases and exhibiting rare animals and plants.
? The outdoor space will be composed of a neighborhood yard, an experience yard, a community plaza, etc. in order to re-create traditional rural village outside spaces.
? The MAFRA will utilize the outdoor space as a community space for both urban and rural people, realizing farming in an urban area creating experience spaces such as a paddy field, a field, and an orchard, and after creating special landscapes of the four seasons.
? As for architecture, the ministry will consider green sustainable green buildings and pursue a design based on harmony with nature, ,and on the value of agriculture and rural areas, with the goal of creating an experience environment that visitors can use easily and safely.
? With reference to 'exhibition, experience and education,' the center will provide varied content that satisfies people's curiosity and intellect concerning the agricultural and fishery industries, with an understanding of the preciousness and culture of the industries The center will develop and implement interactive content, allowing visitors to participate.
? In particular, a production room following the successful cases of the Making Shop of Exploratorium in California of the US and Indefinite Imagination Room of the Gwacheon Science Museum in Korea will be utilized to develop, produce and install exhibition and DIY items while communicating with visitors. A job experience hall will provide various career experience programs on the agriculture, fishery and food industries to future generations.

"We will do all that our powers permit to build the center, which will play an important role in history, culture, experience, exhibition, education and public relations for the agriculture and farming communities, linking cities and farming villages in an integrated cultural space, highlighting the value and potential of agriculture and rural areas," said an official of the MAFRA.
? "I hope that everyone will be interested in the center actively participating in the design contest, and donating artifacts during the first quarter of this year."
