Chiba: LS Electric Co., a South Korean electrical equipment maker, announced the commencement of construction for a grid-connected energy storage system (ESS) facility in Japan. This initiative is part of the company's strategy to broaden its international business operations.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the ESS facility will be located in Chiba, east of Tokyo, and will feature a 2-megawatt power conditioning system alongside an 8 MWh battery. This marks LS Electric's first fully executed project in Japan. The system is designed to store energy by connecting to the power grid, providing electricity as needed to mitigate fluctuations in renewable energy generation from sources such as solar and wind.

Japan is targeting an increase in the proportion of renewable energy in its national energy mix to 36-38 percent by 2030, up from 19.9 percent in 2020. LS Electric views this project as a significant step in establishing itself as a crucial player in the energy transition, with plans to actively expand its influence within Japan's ESS market, according to Cho Wook-dong, director at LS Electric.
