Seoul: Local tax services were partially down Wednesday due to technical issues affecting an online local tax system, the interior ministry said.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Standard Local Tax System, an internal network used by local officials, was disrupted due to a sudden surge in data traffic during the process of updating the system in time for Wednesday's launch of new local governments elected in the June 3 local elections. This disruption has caused outages across several platforms, including WeTax, an online tax service site, automated administration kiosks, and the Gov24 portal.
WeTax, which was slated to resume operations at 8 a.m. following two scheduled suspensions to accommodate changes related to the local elections, did not resume as planned. By the afternoon, some local tax services, including those for tax payments, were restored.
In response to the disruptions, the ministry has extended the deadline for all local tax filings and payments, originally due between last Friday and this Thursday, to Friday. The ministry also indicated that additional extensions could be made if the system failure continues.
