Seoul: A court on Thursday approved the live broadcast of the first hearing of former President Yoon Suk Yeol's new trial on charges related to his failed martial law bid. Yoon, who has been standing trial on charges of leading an insurrection through the martial law imposition in December, is scheduled to attend the first hearing of the second trial at the Seoul Central District Court on Friday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the court said it granted a request from the special counsel team investigating the case to allow live broadcasts and that the broadcast will run from the start of the hearing at 10:15 a.m. until its conclusion. The approval was in accordance with a law mandating the establishment of the team, it said.
The team had simultaneously asked for permission to televise a separate hearing on Yoon's request for bail, but that request was denied. The court plans to explain the reason for its denial during the bail hearing set to take place immediately after the new trial hearing, as the law requires it to permit broadcasts in the absence of special circumstances or explain the reasons for denial.
In the new trial, Yoon faces charges of violating the rights of Cabinet members and creating a revised proclamation after the martial law declaration, among others. He has been held in custody since his second arrest on July 10.
