Daegu: The Samsung Lions announced Friday they have signed Japanese right-hander Satoshi Miyamori as their new Asian quota player. The Lions said Miyamori, 28, will make US$73,000 for the rest of the season.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Miyamori is replacing fellow Japanese pitcher Yura Miyaji, who struggled to a 5.87 ERA in 36 relief outings. He struck out 30 and issued 23 walks in 30 2/3 innings, while also hitting seven batters.

Miyamori began his professional career with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles in Nippon Professional Baseball in 2022, and enjoyed a 22-game scoreless streak during his rookie campaign. Across four seasons with the Golden Eagles, Miyamori went 2-3 with a save and 10 holds, along with a 5.10 ERA in 65 1/3 innings.

Before joining the Lions, Miyamori had spent the 2026 season with a minor league team Oisix Niigata Albirex Baseball Club, going 5-5 with a 4.36 ERA in 17 appearances.

Starting this year, the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) is allowing teams to sign a player from Japan, Taiwan or Australia to fill their Asian quota, in addition to their usual group of three foreign-born players.

The Lions are in second place in the 10-team KBO at 59-39-2 (wins-losses-ties), 1 1/2 games behind the KT Wiz with 44 games left. The Lions own the second-best team ERA at 4.21.

The Lions have overhauled their pitching staff over the past month. On July 11, they acquired former big leaguer Chris Paddack to take over from Jack O'Loughlin. Then nine days later, with their ace Ariel Jurado out with shoulder inflammation, they signed Austin Voth, another ex-major leaguer, as a temporary replacement.

The KBO season is on pause after the league decided on Thursday to cancel all the remaining games of the week due to extreme heat. The season will resume Tuesday.
