Okinawa: The Samsung Lions announced Thursday that their new American pitcher, Matt Manning, is set to leave their training camp in Japan to return to South Korea for testing on his ailing right elbow. This development is another setback for a team that is already missing a key starting pitcher. According to Yonhap News Agency, a Lions official stated that the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) is working to arrange a flight for Manning, who has been training in the Japanese prefecture of Okinawa since earlier this month. Manning experienced difficulties during a scrimmage against the Hanwha Eagles on Tuesday, allowing four runs on three hits, three walks, and a hit-by-pitch in just 2/3 of an inning. Following the game, he reported elbow pain. The Lions may need to find a replacement for Manning before he makes an appearance in a regular-season game. The 28-year-old right-hander joined the team in December, signing a contract worth US$1 million. The team is already dealing with the absence of their top South Korean starter, Won Tae-in, who is also sidelined due to elbow issues. Won was removed from the national team ahead of the World Baseball Classic and is currently undergoing treatments away from the Lions.
