Lansing: LG Energy Solution Ltd. (LGES), a prominent battery manufacturer from South Korea, has commenced operations at its seventh battery plant in North America, addressing the increasing need for energy storage batteries. The newly operational LG Energy Solution Michigan-Lansing facility will produce batteries for energy storage systems (ESSs) and electric vehicles (EVs), targeting an annual production capacity of over 350 gigawatt-hours (GWh) upon reaching full-scale operations.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the growing demand for power in the United States has prompted the Lansing facility to play a crucial role in aiding utilities with efficient energy storage and distribution across the power grid. LGES Chief Executive Kim Dong-myung highlighted that the Lansing plant would produce advanced batteries essential for the future of mobility and the expanding energy infrastructure and digital economy in America.
U.S. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum emphasized the significance of domestic battery production in fortifying America's energy independence, creating high-quality jobs, and promoting the American Energy Dominance Agenda. He underscored Michigan's advantageous position in leading this initiative, citing its skilled workforce and manufacturing capabilities as vital components in bolstering the domestic battery supply chain.
With the addition of the Lansing plant, LGES now operates seven battery plants across North America, comprising six in the United States and one in Canada. Of these, five plants cater to both ESSs and EVs, while the remaining two focus solely on producing EV batteries. In response to the surging demand for ESS batteries, LGES plans to achieve over 50 GWh of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cell production capacity in North America by December. This expansion includes facilities in Michigan, Ontario, and joint ventures in Ohio and Tennessee.
The strategic move comes as battery companies seek to secure more ESS battery deals amidst a slowdown in the EV market. The U.S. ESS market is projected to grow significantly, with expectations to quadruple by 2031, reaching a capacity of 499 GWh, as reported by market research firm Wood Mackenzie.
