Seoul: LG Energy Solution Ltd. (LGES), South Korea's leading battery maker, announced a partnership with U.S. startup South8 Technologies to jointly develop battery cells for aerospace applications. This collaboration is part of LGES's efforts to expand its customer base and product portfolio.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the partnership will focus on co-developing high-performance batteries utilizing South8's liquefied gas electrolyte technology. South8 has pioneered the world's first liquefied gas electrolyte for lithium-ion batteries, enabling stable operation in extremely low temperatures below minus 60 C, which is essential for outer space applications. Conventional liquid electrolytes fail to perform reliably at temperatures around minus 20 C.

The technology also aims to enhance battery safety by minimizing the risk of fire or explosion due to physical shocks or rapid temperature changes. An LGES official stated that the company plans to create new customer value in sectors such as aerospace exploration by making use of this innovative technology.
