Seoul: LG Chem Ltd. has filed for a court injunction against the South Korean arm of China's Ronbay Technology, marking the latest development in a patent dispute that originated in 2024, industry sources reported Tuesday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, LG Chem filed the injunction against Jaese Energy last month. This action is linked to a lawsuit submitted to the Seoul Central District Court in August 2024, which accuses the Chinese firm of infringing on multiple patents.
The injunction application follows a decision by the Intellectual Property Trial and Appeal Board, which recently upheld the validity of several LG Chem patents, countering Jaese's previous claim of invalidity.
Industry observers noted that if the court approves the injunction, it could effectively halt Jaese Energy's operations in South Korea, with possible repercussions for the global cathode materials supply chain.
An official from LG Chem stated, "LG Chem's patent technologies are crucial in advancing South Korea's high-performance batteries in the global market." The company aims to leverage its rights and patent portfolio to offer varied intellectual property business models and encourage industry-wide growth.
