Beijing: President Lee Jae Myung's special envoys embarked on a mission to China on Sunday, aiming to deliver a personal letter from President Lee to Chinese President Xi Jinping. This diplomatic initiative aligns with President Lee's concurrent visit to Washington for summit discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the delegation is led by former National Assembly Speaker Park Byeong-seug, accompanied by ruling Democratic Party lawmakers Kim Tae-nyeon and Park Jeung, along with Roh Jae-hun, son of former President Roh Tae-woo. Prior to departure, Park expressed his commitment to articulate the Lee administration's foreign policy, emphasizing its foundation on "practical diplomacy."
Park highlighted that the president's letter primarily focuses on enhancing the "strategic cooperative partnership" to benefit the citizens of both nations. He also mentioned that the letter might include an invitation for President Xi to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit scheduled in South Korea's historic city of Gyeongju in October.
The envoys plan to meet with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday and Zhao Leji, chairman of the National People's Congress, on Tuesday. They intend to reaffirm the Korean government's dedication to furthering the "strategic cooperative partnership" with China and explore avenues for collaboration in areas such as the economy, culture, and interpersonal exchanges, as stated by the president's office.
This visit by Lee's envoys to China occurs simultaneously with Lee's official visit to Washington for talks with U.S. President Donald Trump.
