Seoul: President Lee Jae Myung's approval rating has seen an uptick, reaching 55.9 percent, driven by favorable reactions to his recent economic diplomacy efforts in the Middle East and Africa, as reported by a recent survey.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the survey conducted by Realmeter, commissioned by a local news outlet, indicated a 1.4 percentage point increase in positive assessments of Lee's job performance from the previous week. The negative assessment of Lee's performance saw a decrease of 0.7 percentage points, falling to 40.5 percent.
Realmeter attributed the rise in Lee's approval rating to his diplomatic achievements, particularly highlighting the signing of an agreement valued at 150 trillion won (approximately US$101.9 billion) with the United Arab Emirates. This agreement marked the beginning of his four-nation tour, which also included visits to Egypt, South Africa, and Turkey. However, the approval rating experienced a slight dip towards the week's end, influenced by a sharp rise in the won-dollar exchange rate and a drop in the Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) below the 3,900 mark.
The survey covered 2,523 adults over five days last week, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points and a 95 percent confidence level.
In another survey by the same pollster, conducted with 1,004 individuals aged 18 and over on Thursday and Friday, the ruling Democratic Party's approval rating rose by 0.8 percentage points, reaching 47.5 percent. Meanwhile, support for the main opposition People Power Party also saw an increase of 0.6 percentage points, climbing to 34.82 percent. This poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points, maintaining the same 95 percent confidence rate.
