Lee’s Approval Rating Dips Amid Political Turmoil and Economic Concerns

Seoul: President Lee Jae Myung's approval rating experienced a slight decline to 54.8 percent last week after a temporary rebound, amid growing public dissatisfaction over recent political and economic developments, a survey revealed on Monday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the survey conducted by Realmeter for a local news outlet showed that the positive assessment of President Lee's performance decreased by 1.1 percentage points from the previous week. Concurrently, his negative assessment slightly increased by 0.2 percentage points, reaching 40.7 percent. President Lee's approval rating had previously peaked at 56.7 percent in the first week of November, before falling to 54.5 percent in the second week and then recovering to 55.9 percent in the third week.

Realmeter attributed the downward trend to the 15-year prison sentence sought for former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo and the National Assembly's endorsement of an arrest motion for Rep. Choo Kyung-ho of the main opposition People Power Party (PPP). The pollster indicated that these political incidents were perceived by some as acts of "political retaliation" against the opposition.

The survey also highlighted that economic concerns, such as high interest rates and a record-high won-dollar exchange rate, contributed to the negative public sentiment. The survey, which sampled 2,538 adults from Monday to Friday last week, has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.9 percentage points and a confidence rate of 95 percent.

In a separate survey conducted by Realmeter on 1,012 individuals aged 18 and over, the approval rating for the ruling Democratic Party saw a decrease of 1.9 percentage points to 45.6 percent. Meanwhile, support for the PPP increased by 2.6 percentage points to 37.4 percent. This poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points, with a confidence rate of 95 percent.
