Seoul: President Lee Jae Myung on Sunday pledged to seek a powerful defense reform to build a smart and independent military that can protect the country from any invasion, instead of relying on the sheer number of troops.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee emphasized the need for advanced technology in the military, stating that traditional troop numbers should not be the sole measure of defense capabilities. In a Facebook post, Lee highlighted the potential of integrating artificial intelligence combat robots, autonomous drones, and precision missile systems as effective tools against large enemy forces.
Lee also pointed out the strength of South Korea's reserve forces in comparison to North Korea, noting that the 2.6 million reserve personnel are prepared for combat at any time. He emphasized that South Korea ranks fifth globally in defense capabilities, advocating for increased defense spending, a smarter military, and a stronger arms industry.
He stressed the importance of autonomous defense capabilities as global tensions rise after a prolonged period of peace. Lee rejected the notion that South Korea must rely on foreign forces for defense, describing this view as "submissive" and underscoring his vision for a formidable and self-reliant military.
