Seoul: President Lee Jae Myung vowed Friday to build a nation where the state shares the responsibility of parents and looks after their well-being in old age. Lee posted the message on Facebook to mark Parents' Day, saying he learned after becoming a father of two children that a parent "carries the worlds" of their children on his or her back.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee emphasized that reducing the burdens on parents will help South Korea advance as a nation. He addressed all parents, stating, "The more we lessen the burdens of life that are placed on parents' shoulders, the more the Republic of Korea can step forward to become a truly advanced nation." He pledged to take better care of parents' lives and expand practical measures to support them, aiming to create a nation where the state and community share responsibility for child-rearing.
Lee outlined his administration's plans for senior citizens, which include introducing local community care services, creating 1.15 million jobs for the elderly, and revising the pension system. He expressed his belief that parents who have dedicated their lives should enjoy their later years without worries, enabling everyone to dream of a better future.
During a Parents' Day ceremony at the Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry headquarters in Seoul, Lee reiterated his commitment to increased government support for senior citizens. He particularly acknowledged the parents of firefighters and police officers who died in the line of duty, honoring their sacrifices with a heavy heart.
In a gesture of respect, Lee pinned carnations on the parents' clothing before delivering his remarks, demonstrating consolation and respect.
