Seoul: President Lee Jae Myung on Sunday called for utmost efforts to minimize damage from downpours in the country's southwestern region. The call came as heavy rains fell in South Jeolla Province, with precipitation forecast to reach up to 250 millimeters in some areas through Tuesday morning. Some 142.1 mm of rain fell in the southwestern county of Muan in just an hourlong span Sunday evening.
According to Yonhap News Agency, President Lee emphasized the need for relevant ministries and provincial governments to take proactive administrative measures to minimize damage. He urged the public to constantly check weather forecasts and cooperate with government notifications. Lee communicated these directives in a Facebook post, highlighting the importance of preparedness during the ongoing adverse weather conditions.
Despite being on summer vacation at a presidential retreat on Jeodo Island off the south coast, President Lee stated that he is actively monitoring the situation. He has set up a system that allows for teleconference meetings with relevant authorities to ensure a coordinated response to the heavy rains affecting the region.
